Personal Allowance used: £12,570. Dividends are treated as the top slice of your income - the Dividend Allowance and dividend rates apply to whichever tax band your dividends fall into once your other income is stacked underneath them. Figures use published 2026/27 rates and are estimates for general guidance only.

How dividend tax is worked out

Dividends are added on top of your other taxable income - your salary or other earnings use up the Personal Allowance and lower Income Tax bands first, and your dividends sit above that in the stack. The first £500 of dividend income each year is covered by the Dividend Allowance and taxed at 0%, wherever it falls in that stack. Everything above the allowance is taxed at the dividend rate for whichever band it falls into.

Dividend tax rates stay UK-wide

Income Tax on non-dividend income is partly devolved - Scotland sets its own bands and rates. Dividend Tax was deliberately kept reserved to Westminster, so the Dividend Allowance and dividend rates are identical across the whole UK, even for Scottish taxpayers whose other income is taxed under different bands.
