How this calculator works

To go from a salary to an hourly rate, we divide your annual salary by the total hours you work in a year: hours per week multiplied by weeks worked per year. To go the other way, we multiply your hourly rate by the same total.

Common working weeks

  • 35 hours a week is common in some office and public sector roles
  • 37.5 hours a week is a typical full-time week once a lunch break is unpaid
  • 40 hours a week is standard in many other full-time roles

If you take paid holiday, 52 weeks is usually the right figure to use, since you're still paid during that time. If you're working unpaid weeks (for example, term-time only contracts), reduce the weeks per year to match.

Gross vs take-home pay

Every figure here is gross, before Income Tax and National Insurance. For your actual take-home pay, use the Take Home Pay Calculator, which applies current UK tax rates.
