How loan repayments are calculated

This calculator uses the standard amortising-loan formula: the same rate and monthly payment throughout the term, structured so the loan is fully repaid, with interest, by the end. Early payments cover more interest; later payments pay off more of the amount you borrowed.

What is APR?

APR (Annual Percentage Rate) is the yearly cost of borrowing, including interest. It lets you compare loans on a like-for-like basis. The APR you're actually offered depends on the lender and your credit profile - advertised rates are often only available to some borrowers, so use this calculator with a rate you've genuinely been quoted where possible.

Effect of changing the term

A longer term lowers your monthly payment but increases the total interest you pay over the life of the loan, since interest has longer to accrue. A shorter term does the opposite.
