How it's worked out
The Personal Allowance reduces by £1 for every £2 of adjusted net income above the taper start, which creates an effective marginal tax rate of 60% in that band once Income Tax on the newly taxable slice is added on top. Pension contributions and Gift Aid donations both reduce adjusted net income, which is why increasing them can restore some or all of the allowance. Figures use published 2026/27 thresholds and are estimates for general guidance only.
How the Personal Allowance taper works
Everyone starts with the standard Personal Allowance, but once adjusted net income passes £100,000, it's reduced by £1 for every £2 earned above that point, reaching zero at £125,140. This calculator shows exactly how much of your allowance survives at a given income.
