How Income Tax is worked out
Income Tax is charged on your taxable income - your income after the Personal Allowance has been deducted - progressively across bands. That means only the portion of your income that falls inside a given band is taxed at that band's rate, not your whole income at once, so moving into a higher band only affects the part above the threshold.
The Personal Allowance
Most people can earn up to the Personal Allowance each year before paying any Income Tax at all. Above £100,000 of adjusted net income, the allowance is gradually withdrawn, reducing by £1 for every £2 earned above that threshold until it reaches zero.
Scotland's own bands
Scotland uses a different set of Income Tax bands and rates to the rest of the UK, decided by the Scottish Government, while the Personal Allowance itself stays the same across all of the UK. Select your region above to see the right bands applied.
