How employee National Insurance works

Employee Class 1 National Insurance is charged on your earnings above the Primary Threshold. Pay below that threshold is NI-free, then the main rate applies up to the Upper Earnings Limit, and a lower rate applies to anything above it - a similar shape to Income Tax bands, but with its own separate thresholds and rates.

Why it doesn't vary by region

National Insurance is set by the UK government and applies at the same rates everywhere in the UK. Income Tax is the one that varies, because Scotland sets its own bands and rates independently.

For the Income Tax side of your pay as well, see the Income Tax Calculator, or get the full breakdown on the Take Home Pay Calculator.
