Assumes interest accrues monthly on the outstanding balance and the payment stays the same throughout. Real card providers may calculate interest slightly differently (e.g. daily accrual), and minimum payments usually change as the balance falls.

Why the payment amount matters so much

A payment close to the interest charged each month barely reduces the balance, so it can take many years - or never clear at all - even on a modest balance. Increasing the monthly payment, even by a relatively small amount, usually cuts both the payoff time and the total interest paid substantially, because more of each payment goes towards the balance itself rather than interest.
